Evolution of Sure-Track Brake System

The history, system philosophy, design evolution, and performance of the Sure-Track anti-lock automotive braking system are presented and discussed. Considerations of performance, driver skill, reliability, and commercial acceptance resulted in the choice of a vacuum-electronic rear wheel anti-lock system that incorporates individual wheel speed sensing and control of braking as a pair. The system provides superior directional stability under “panic” braking conditions while maintaining stopping distance equal to or shorter than those for locked wheels under most road conditions.

New Chemical Test for the Characterization of Organic Brake Linings — Pyrolytic Gas Chromatography

Pyrolytic gas chromatography (PGC) has been applied to the characterization of the organic constituents of brake linings. The test involves the pyrolysis of a sample followed by the instrumental separation and sensing of the products of decomposition. A study of experimental variables, such as pyrolysis temperature, has allowed the selection of conditions which yield excellent reproducibility and sensitivity. The preferred test conditions, which have been incorporated in Ford's brake lining quality control specifications, result in a relatively rapid, meaningful test for constancy of composition.

The presentation here of a computer program simulating an engine cycle emphasizes mechanical factors under the control of the engine designer rather than scientific aspects of combustion. Data secured by measuring valves, manifolds, and other parts on a flow bench are used to calculate instantaneous flow in and out of the cylinder for the firing engine. Heat transfer, finite time of combustion, and variable specific heat of the gas are also calculated. The program is particularly well adapted to indicating the direction and relative magnitude of the effect of changing one variable, such as valve size, at a time.

Manner in which entire process responds to a high degree of automation. 2. Close tolerances that can be maintained from casting to casting. 3. Raw sand requirements are reduced from 125 lb (previous method) to 20 lb. 4. Results in 70% reduction in weight of chips produced. 5. The Ford Approach to AIR SUSPENSION

FORD'S answer to the air suspension problem is a system of the “open” type in which the air is exhausted from the springs to the atmosphere. It features a 2-speed automatic height and leveling control to handle differing load conditions. In adapting the air springs to the suspension arms, the front suspension was modified only slightly, while the rear was completely redesigned. The author reports that a significant improvement in passenger comfort has been achieved with the new suspension, especially for the rear seat passenger. Also, the car height remains constant under all loadings—a contribution to the car's appearance.

APPLICATIONS of nuclear energy in automotive manufacture have been made principally in the field of radioactivity. These are grouped under the following categories: radiography, nondestructive testing, gaging and control, tracer techniques, and static neutralizers. Radioactivity techniques are being used in foundry operations to check stock and metal levels in cupolas and distribution of element additives. In steel operations, these techniques are being used to check assimilation of ore-concentrate fines and thickness of rolled sheet steel. Other applications include measurement of pipe and wall thickness in pressure lines and engines, and inspection of castings and welds for internal faults. Radioactive techniques for improving processes, quality, and materials have potentially universal application. Greater industrial access to reactors will permit broader study and speed the development of new applications of radio-activity in industry.

Pneumatic and Sonic Measurement of Combustion-Chamber Volume

AMONG the difficulties usually associated with measurement of combustion-chamber volume by liquid methods are amount of time required, contamination of combustion-chamber deposits, and inaccuracies arising from entrapped air. Use of a gaseous fluid such as air as the measuring medium eliminates most of the objectionable features of volume measurement with liquids. Techniques utilizing air for volume measurement fall into two basic classifications: dynamic or sonic methods, and static or pneumatic systems. Cylinder leakage and acoustic damping by engine deposits affect the accuracy of volume measurements based on dynamic properties of combustion-chamber volume, hence small volumes occupied by combustion-chamber carbon deposits must be measured separately by static or pneumatic means.

Camshaft-Tappet Problems in Ford Overhead-Valve Engines

IN THE first part of this paper dealing with the metallurgical aspects of the camshaft-tappet problems met with in the design of the new Ford overhead-valve V8 engines, Messrs. Laird and Stevens describe the events which led to the adoption of the as-cast alloy-iron camshaft, nitro-carburized martensitic tappet combination. The combination cited works well in the engines described, but it is not implied that it will perform satisfactorily elsewhere. In the second portion of the paper, Mr. Iles discusses the test schedule devised in connection with the development of the camshaft-tappet materials in the new engines. It is stated that important findings will occur when such tests involve a large number of parts, making possible the study of results on a frequency basis. Tests have shown that a predominantly martensitic tappet structure results in superior performance in combination with the as-cast alloy-iron camshaft used.

NODULAR cast iron, so called because the graphite is present as finely dispersed, well-rounded particles, is made in two stages: The first stage consists of the addition of magnesium or other carbide formers, which promote the formation of white iron in one normally solidifying gray. In the second stage a ferrosilicon type of inoculant overcomes the tendency toward white iron and causes the graphite to precipitate out in the form of small spherulites. The methods of making nodular iron, the effect of composition on physical properties, economic factors involved, and potential applications are discussed in this paper.

Various surface coatings have been investigated to discover which ones will give this protection. The authors discuss here three types of surface treatment for cast-iron and steel that do give superior wear and scuff resistance.
